After Mehmet Ali Pasha won the Ottoman-Saudi War in 1813 where he squashed the Wahhabi uprising against the Ottoman Turks in the Arabian Peninsula, the Turks awarded him the Eyalet of Habesh, along with the ports of Massawa and Sawakin. Since there was a second resurgence of the Wahhabi uprising again, he had to relinquish the rule of the two ports. After the uprising came to an end, the ports were given back to him in 1846.
