After the failure of his siege attempt of Kassala, a town on the Sudanese border of Eritrea in the western lowlands, Ras Alula turned around and ordered a ruthless massacre of the Baria/Nara and Kunama ethnic groups, looting and pillaging their territory. According the historian Alberto Pollara, about two thirds of the population of these ethnic groups was wiped out. (I Baria e i Cunama, pp 50-52)
